This article presents a case study of a big German enterprise (Siemens) facing a large wave of public critique and protest activities. The public was concerned about the political circumstances surrounding the construction of the Cabora Bassa hydroelectric dam in Mozambique in which Siemens was largely involved.This study reports the escalating protest against the firm over three years (1970–1972) and the firm's responses during that period. The analysis of the case focusses on the behaviour of the firm which is interpreted (...) in the light of the business social responsibility doctrine. The article proposes that the firm experienced a legitimation crisis and responded by reorienting its philosophy of business. (shrink)

This essay asks how we can explain why, in contrast with Western responses, a large number of Chinese citizens from all walks of life appear to have little sympathy with the spate of recent cases of dissidents having fallen foul of government regulations pertaining to public political criticism. The answer proposed in the essay is that there are cultural obstacles to the emergence of political dialogue in China beyond the well-canvassed official strictures on political critique. The essay addresses two of (...) these obstacles under the headings of the Confucian meta-rule of obedience and normative nominalism, argued to be characteristic of traditional Chinese conceptions of language. The reasons why these two cultural features are able to contribute so effectively to the retardation of political dialogicity in China, this essay claims, are to be sought in their deep roots in Chinese thought and the political unconscious of China to this day. After 150 years of scientific developments, the periodic system of chemical elements is still an icon of modern science. Its resilience is striking. The icon used today by scientists and teachers is in fact the outcome of many rearrangements and reinterpretations by the scientific community during that period. This success is often explained as a result of the underlying atomic structure, discovered in the first decades of the 20th century, an explanation that completely neglects the fine structure of the process (...) of ongoing renegotiation and successive stabilizations. How did indeed contemporary scientists navigate in times of reinterpretation? The physicist Lise Meitner and the chemist Ida Noddack were, in different ways, involved in discoveries and interpretations of the periodic system. In 1934, as part of the celebration of the centenary of Dmitri Mendeleev's birth, they each published an article on the system: Meitner in Die Naturwissenschaften, and Noddack in Angewandte Chemie. These two articles, written from the perspectives of a nuclear physicist and a chemist experienced in searching for undiscovered elements, respectively, constitute excellent sources for understanding what new discoveries and insights meant for the meaning and value of the periodic system at the very beginning of the nuclear age in science. Through an analysis of the two contributions, we will argue that resilience is the foremost value of the periodic system. We will also discuss what this value means for the future of the periodic system and its representations. (shrink)

Ένας αρχαϊκός θησαυρός στο ιερό του Απόλλωνα (Θησαυρός 5): αρχιτεκτονική μελέτη Στο άρθρο αυτό παρουσιάζεται η αρχιτεκτονική μελέτη ενός από τα αρχαιότερα κτίρια του ιερού του Απόλλωνα στη Δήλο, του Θησαυρού 5. Ο θησαυρός βρίσκεται στα βόρεια του ιερού του Απόλλωνα και είναι το δυτικότερο από τα πέντε μνημεία που οικοδομήθηκαν γύρω από τον Πώρινο ναό. Η μελέτη ξεκινά με την παρουσίαση των κτιρίων αυτών, που θεωρούνται ως οίκοι. Το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο είναι αφιερωμένο στο αρχαιότερο από τα κτίρια αυτά, το (...) Θησαυρό 5 αναφέρονται επίσης οι προηγούμενες μελέτες για το μνημείο αυτό. Εξετάζεται ιδιαιτέρως και απορρίπτεται, η υπόθεση του R. Vallois για την ύπαρξη μιας κλασικής φάσης του Θησαυρού 5. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο προτείνεται η αποκατάσταση της αρχικής φάσης του δωρικού αυτού κτιρίου, το οποίο χρονολογείται γύρω στο 550 π. Χ. με βάση την τεχνική κατασκευής των θεμελίων και το στυλ του κίονά του. Το ζήτημα της ταύτισης του κτιρίου και τα κριτήρια χρονολόγησης εκτίθενται στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο. Στο πρώτο από τα δύο παραρτήματα παρουσιάζονται οι επτά λίθοι που ο R. Vallois είχε προτείνει να αποδοθούν στην κλασική φάση του μνημείου. (shrink)

V. 1 is a detailed analysis of a previously unknown proof copy of the first edition of Galileo's Sidereus nuncius, in which watercolor drawings appear in place of the etchings of the published edition, consigned in 2005 to the antiquarian bookselling firm of Martayan Lan. V. 2 is an account of the composition and production of the edition, based on analysis of extant copies as well as the New York proof copy. V. 3 was written in response to the discovery, (...) soon after the publication of v. 2, that the proof copy was in fact an elaborate forgery produced between 2003 and 2005 under the direction of Marino Massimo de Caro, as first reported in the article "A very rare book," by Nicholas Schmidle, in The New Yorker issue of 16 December 2013. V. 4, in German, is a heavily revised edition of Horst Bredekamp's Galilei der Künstler, which had included a chapter on the then unrecognized forgery. (shrink)

Au centre de l’Agora des Compétaliastes à Délos, une immense base à degrés de marbre, communément appelée le «Monument carré », a été considérée comme un autel, une base de statue ou la fondation d’un petit temple dorique. L’étude architecturale a permis d’identifier vingt-deux blocs errants et de restituer un pilier monumental d’une dizaine de mètres de hauteur. Au-dessus des trois degrés, le fût (large de 3,50 m) était constitué d’orthostates surmontés d’assises alternativement basses et hautes et couronné par un (...) entablement ionique. Ce monument ressemble étonnamment aux piliers attalides de Delphes et d’Athènes mais sa construction, située après 125 av. J.-C., doit plutôt être mise en relation avec la puissance des Italici dont les sanctuaires étaient établis en ce lieu : bien que la dédicace n’ait pas été conservée, il n’est pas exclu que le pilier ait porté la statue en char d’un magistrat romain.
